Starting in the Summer of 2023, I have been working as an assistant for an interior designer. I had not done much design work outside of theatre before, but I was surprised how many of the skills transfer.
With it only being a team of two, the work has been a lot more fluid than I am used to. This has resulted in a lot of the work being done on site or on the go.
Design Proposal
This is a design proposal presentation made for a coffee shop to get an idea of the overall style and finishes of their remodel. The focus was to brighten up the cafe as well as to make it a more cohesive visual experience.
Design Boards
One of my main jobs has been to source items and create inspiration boards for each step of a project.
Starting with multiple options for each item, then creating stories of how items could work together.
These boards are then shown to the client to help them visualize different possibilities for their space allowing them to make more informed decisions when verifying their final choices.
Renderings
Throughout our process, I have taken my rendering skills from my theatre work and applied them to creating custom visuals for clients. This has allowed them to visualized ideas or choices beyond just an inspiration board.
Project Management
On a less creative note, much of my day to is doing administrative work to make sure projects are running smoothly.
This has included tracking what items have been selected, items that have been invoiced, yet to be invoiced, as well as items that have not yet been finalized. Other tasks have been making sure we have measurements for every space, as well as taking notes as we meet with clients, contractors, or during design conversations to reference later.
